Founded in 1918 by Ichiro Shirai in Hatsukaishi, near Hiroshima, Chugoku Jozo Distillery initially focused on producing sake fermented products. In 1963, it expanded its offerings to include shochu and a blended whisky. In 2003, the distillery introduced Togouchi 17 Year Old, a blended whisky matured in a converted railway tunnel. Under the leadership of Koichiro Shirai, Sakurao Distillery was established adjacent to the original in 2018 to meet the increased demand for Togouchi.
STYLISTIC
To reach the distillery, you need to travel to the Seto Inland Sea, where the liquids are distilled at the foot of Mount Osorakan, in the small town of Akiota-Togouchi. The barrels rest in an original underground cellar, obtained from a disused railway tunnel.
Togouchi whiskies experiment with different types of barrels for finishes that give delicate, fragrant and light scents to every sip. The ex-Sake and ex-beer stand out above all.
